"Schnabel's Pianoforte-Fabrik und Leihinstitut in Breslau wurde im
Jahre 1814 von Michael Schnabel begründet und 1823 durch den Ankauf des
Krausischen Instituts erweitert. Dieses Institut beschränkte sich
Anfangs nur auf das Vermiethen der Flügel und gestaltete sich erst
später zu einer Flügel-Fabrik, in welcher Karl Schnabel lernte. Wiewohl
damals nur sechsoctavige Instrumente gebaut wurden, wußte diese Anstalt
doch die Aufmerksamkeit berühmter Virtuosen (z. B. die eines Hummel, der
bei seinen in Breslau gegebenen Concerten auf Schnabel'schen Flügeln
spielte) auf sich zu lenken und allgemeinen Beifall zu erringen. In der
1839 stattgefundenen Breslauer-Kunstausstellung war ein Schnabel'scher
Flügel mit Streicher'scher Dämpfung, das erste Instrument der Art,
welches in Breslau angefertigt wurde, vorhanden. Dr. Zastra sagte
darüber in der schlesischen Zeitung :„ . . . Die fortwährenden
Verbesserungen im Bau der Flügel-Instrumente liefernden erfreulichen
Beweis, daß man auch hierin bemüht ist, das Neue, welches nachs
orgfältiger Prüfungals gut anerkannt wurde, in Anwendung zu bringen.
Gelegenheit zu solchen Bearbeitungen war in der diesjährigen
Kunstausstellung geboten, wo unter andern guten Flügeln ein in der
Pianoforte-Fabrik des Herrn M. Schnabel verfertigter sich befand, welcher
durch eine hier noch nicht angewandte Streichersche Patent-Dämpfung die
Blickeder Kennerin hohem Gradeauf sich zog. Die äußerst zweckmäßige
Einrichtung dieser Dämpfung ist bereits bei fälligan erkannt worden und
Herr Schnabel findet daher auch an andern Instrumentverfertigern
Nachahmer. Bei Anempfehlung dieser Dämpfung kann Referent nicht umhin,
die trefflichenInstrumenteaus der genanntenFabriklobendzu erwähnen,
welches ich wegender Kraft und Fülle ihres Tones vorzüglich zu
Concert-Instrumenten eignen (wovon Ref. in einigen musikalischen Soirées
sich, über- zeugte) und auch durchdie Erfüllung jeder andern
Anforderung,die anein gutes Instrument gemacht werden kann, die
Beachtungder Musikkenner wahrhaft verdienen." Als Lißzt in Breslau in
einem seiner Concerte auf einem Schnabel'schen Instrument gespielt
hatte, hieß es in der Breslauer-Zeitung (1843 nr. 35) u. A. „. . . das
Instrument, auf welchem Herr Dr. Lißzt spielte, war aus der
Schnabel'schen Fabrik.

Anschlagsehrwohl, spielte sich leicht und besriedigte, was den Wohlklang
anlangt, in solchem Grade, daß sich der Meister höchst belobigend über
dasselbe aussprechen konnte.“
Nach dem Tode Michael Schnabel des letztern Söhne, Karl und Julius über. Die
sehr zweckmäßige Bauart der Schnabel'schen Flügel deutscher Mechanik,
bekundendie in den Stimmstock eingelegten eiserne Platten und die
eigenthümliche Verspreitzung zur bessern Stimmhaltung; die Flügel sind
durchgehends mit englischen Saiten bezogen und ihre Resonanzboden aus der K.
K. patentirten Fabrik von Biemert und Sohn zu Maderhäuser in Böhmen. Die
Form der Instrumente ist sehr geschmackvoll, der Preis derselben von 140–200
Thaler. Garantie– auf mehrere Jahre. In der gegenwärtig Neumark Nr. 27.
befindlichen Fabrik werden die Bestellungen in kürzester Zeit realisirt,
auch Reparaturen preiswürdig besorgt."

"Schnabel, Karl, geboren am
2. Novbr. 1809 in Breslau, als Sohn von Michael Schnabel (s. u.). Sein Vater
ertheilte ihm den ersten Unterricht, fand aber vorläufig bei seinem Sohne
nicht den geeigneten Boden für seine Mühwaltung. Erst als er ihn in seine
Werkstatt nahm und zum Instrumentenmacher bestimmte, zeigte und entfaltete
derselbe seine musikalische Begabung. Sein Onkel, der Domkapellmeister (s.
oben), betheiligte sich nun auch an seiner Ausbildung, und so gelang es dem
fleissigen Jüngling bald, seinen ersten Erfolg in dreifacher Weise zu
erringen. Er spielte im Deutsch'schen Concert in Breslau auf einem
selbstgebauten Flügel ein selbstcomponirtes Clavierconcert. Bald gehörte er
zu den tüchtigsten Claviervirtuosen Schlesiens und hat sich auch als
Componist sehr rübrig bewiesen. Es erschienen eine Reihe von Compositionen
im Druck, meistens Claviercompositionen und Lieder, in Leipzig bei
Hoffmeister, in Breslau bei Leukart und Cranz, auch Bote und Bock, Berlin,
und Cramer, London. Messen, Cantaten, Offertorien, Clavierconcerte. Seine
Orchesterwerke, wie seine Opern: „Die Weiber von Weinsberg«, »Alma von
Geierstein«, »Preziosa«, »Percival« und »Griseldis« blieben bisher
Manuscript."

"Schnabel, Michael, wurde zu
Naumburg am Quais am 23. Septbr. 1775 geboren. Sein Vater, der dortige
Cantor, bildete ihn, gleich seinem Bruder Joseph Ignaz, in der Musik aus,
und der letztere berief ihn nach Breslau und verschaffte ihm, da er
hauptsächlich auf der Clarinette excellirte, eine Stelle am Theater und als
Choralist an der Kreuzkirche. Er spielte auch andere Instrumente mit
Fertigkeit; so die Guitarre, von der man gewiss weiss, dass er sie in
Breslau einführte, da man dort bisher nur die Mandoline kannte. Auch als
Lehrer für dies Instrument war er sehr gesucht. Einen Namen hat hat er sich
jedoch zumeist als Instrumentenbauer gemacht, indem er 1814 in Breslau eine
Pianofortefabrik begründete, welche bald den Ruf erhielt, vorzügliche
Instrumente zu verfertigen. Hummel, Liszt und andere Virtuosen spielten
Schnabel'sche Instrumente bei ihren Concerten in Breslau. Auf der
Kunstausstellung daselbst war ein Schnabel'scher Flügel das erste Instrument
in Schlesien, bei welchem die Streicher'sche Dämpfung angebracht war.
Schnabel starb am 6. Novbr. 1842 und seine Söhne Karl und Julius führten die
Fabrik fort."

Breslau (1814), fabrique qui fut reprise par son fils. -
SCNABEL Karl, fils du precedent [Karl Schnabel], né à Breslau le 2 nov.
1809, m. dans la m£me ville le 12 mai 1881 ; s'occupa d'abord de la fabrique
de son
père et devint facteur de pianos, mais regut en même temps, de son oncle,
d'excellentes leçons de musique. Aussi, après avoir fait entendre un
concerto de piano de sa composition, sur un piano à queue construit par
lui-même, abandonna-t-il son atelier, pour se vouer complèment à la musique.
Ses compositions n'ont guere eu, cependant, de retentisseinent (lieder,
oeuvres pour piano, cantates, opéras, Messes, oeuvres symphoniques, etc.)."

von Eduard Sponnagel in Liegnitz auf der Ausstellung für Handwerk und
Kunstgewerbe in Breslau 1904. - Im Juli des soeben abgelaufenen Jahres
wurde in Breslau eine Ausstellung für Handwerk und Kunstgewerbe eröffnet
und Ende September wieder geschlossen. Die Pianoforte-Industrie war
leider nur sehr schwach vertreten; im ganzen hatten sich drei Firmen
(eine aus Breslau und zwei aus Liegnitz) beteiligt, so daß von einem
Wettbewerbe in dieser Branche nicht die Rede sein konnte. Die Firma
Eduard Sponnagel, früher Selinke & Sponnagel, in Liegnitz hatte, als
Mitglied des „Kunstgewerbevereins für Breslau und die Provinz
Schlesien", in dessen Sonder-Abteilung drei Instrumente nach
eigenartigen Original-Entwürfen „außer Preisbewerb" ausgestellt. Im Ein
Familienhause des Kunstgewerbevereins war der nach dem Entwurfe des
Herrn Professor Poelzig, Direktor der Königl. Kunst- und
Kunstgewerbe-Schule in Breslau, angefertigte Stutz-Flügel (Fig. 1) zur
Aufstellung gelangt. Das Instrument, in einer Länge von 1,80 m, ist
mattschwarz gehalten, mit Einlagen aus Korallenholz (Maander), und
gehört der modernen Stilrichtung an. Der Flügel hat vielen Beifall und
auch bald einen Käufer gefunden. Im Pavillon des
Kunstgewerbevereins befanden sich zwei Pianinos derselben Firma. Das
eine (Fig. 2) in Alt-Mahagoni, Modell Nr. 7, 1,30 m hoch, ebenfalls in
moderner Ausführung, nach dem Entwurfe des bekannten Kunstmalers und
Architekten Rich. Riemerschmid in München, zeigt das Gehäuse ganz frei
von äußerem Schmuck, weist aber bei dieser Einfachheit eine
Linien-Schönheit auf, die auf Künstler und Kunstliebhaber geradezu
bezaubernd wirkte und auch selbst den weniger kunstverständigen Laien
bei einiger Betrachtung zu ent zücken vermochte. Das andere Pianino
(Fig. 3) in Polisander, matt, Modell 5 B, 1,30 m hoch, ist mit
prächtiger Marketerie-Arbeit in SilhouettenArt ausgestattet. Der Entwurf
ist aus der Königl. Kunstschule in München hervorgegangen, und sein
Urheber ist der Architekt J. Petermüller in München. An diesem
Instrument dokumentiert sich ebenfalls eine besondere Eigenart, die von
dem anerkennenswerten Streben, Neues zu schaffen, spricht. Das Klavier
war bereits für die internationale „Cape Town Industrial Exhibition"
vorgesehen, fand aber gleich nach Schluß der Ausstellung in Deutschland
einen Liebhaber, während das zuerst genannte Pianino in Holland seine
Bestimmung erhielt."
