BIO
1909 - "Pioneers of Scottish Music Trade [...]
The writer's intention, in endeavouring to give a brief account of the
Glasgow pioneers of the music trade, was to carry the details down to
something like fifty years ago and in the later details to refer mostly to
businesses which still exist. The record, however, would be incomplete were
some reference not made to the firm of Jas. Gilmour & Co. (1860). This firm
is now almost forgotten and there would be no special necessity to recall
its existence here were it not for the fact that Gilmour & Co. were
patentees of the Dawes melody harmonium, an invention which aimed at
permiting only the top or melody note on certain stops to sound. The idea
has been revived again and has been successfully carried out by the Positive
Organ, by the Premier Organ and by Howard of Manchester as applied to the
American organ."
