FINDLAY Alexander |
BIO 1909
- "Pioneers of Scottish Music Trade [...] Mr. Alexander Findlay
opened at 116, West Nile Street in 1852, where the business is still carried
on by his sons. A paragraph in "Glasgow Past and Present" states that in
1849 pianos (spinets) were rare in Glasgow in proportion to its wealth and
its population-only a few of the citizens possessing them-but the activity
of the trade at that time, both in manufacturing and in selling, proves this
statement to be erroneous. There were not less than eighteen firms in the
piano and music trade; and as the population was three hundred and
twenty-nine thousand the proportion of music businesses to the number of
inhabitants was higher than at the present day."
