1840 - "The unique piano forte was introduced about thirty years ago by Messrs.
Wilkinson and Wornum, and was the invention and patent of the latter. This
instrument met the taste of the day for instruments of Utile altitude; it
did not stand higher than three feet three inches, and the strings were all
placed diagonally towards the lloor; the action was simple and effective,
but it is not now under manufacture. Numerous inventions and improvements
appeared about this time, some of which were patented, and some not; but we
cannot say more concerning them than that they were productions with
scarcely a difference, and calculated merely to gratify their several makers
with a variety of their own; for their powers and peculiarities were all
much to the same effect under the finger of a performer: indeed we had no
decidedly new thing until the double or Piccolo action appeared. This was
the invention of Mr. Wornum, and patented by him some ten or twelve years
ago; it is applicable to both upright and horizontal instruments, and is now
extensively manufactured in Europe and America."
The Penny Cyclopaedia of the Society for the Difussion
of Useful ..., 1840, p. 142

in doing which, he has paid particular attention, and fully succeeded in the

'Pianoforte-maker' and music publisher ca. 1799-1830
WILKINSON & BRODERIP
(1798)
"Broderip & Wilkinson. Broderip, who was
without doubt Robert Broderip, the musician, organist at Bristol, and son of
John Broderip, of Wells, had been partner in the great firm of Longman and
Broderip, which came to grief some time about 1798. This firm had two places
of business, one at 26, Cheapside, and the other at 13, Haymarket. Longman
founded another business at the Cheapside address, while Broderip entering
into partnership with Wilkinson took over the Haymarket premises. Broderip
and Wilkinson are first-named in the Directory for 1799 and retain a place
till 1808. In 1809, the firm is set down as Wilkinson & Co., and it seems
evident that Broderip was dead; after 1810 this disappears. The following
extract (kindly forwarded by Mr. F. G. Edwards) from the Morning Chronicle,
of January 11th, 1811, proves that Wilkinson & Co. did not remain long in
existence after the death of Broderip, and also shows what became of the
stock and plates: — T. Preston, 97, Strand, acquaints amateurs, etc., that
he has just purchased the entire stock, etc, of Wilkinson & Co., late
Broderip & Wilkinson, of the Hay-market.
Robert Broderip, born at Wells in 1750, died May 14th, 1808, at Bristol, the
year which tallies with the absence of the name from the music firm,
affording considerable confirmation that he was the senior partner in it.
Broderip & Wilkinson did not hold a very large business, publishing
principally sheet music, with an occasional tutor for the harpsichord,
violoncello, etc. One piece of sheet music is a rondo on the air, If a body
meet a body, by Robert Broderip, and some glees taken from Scott's poetry,
by Dr. Clarke, of Cambridge, are among music issued by Wilkinson & Co.,
late Broderip & Wilkinson."

"Notice is hereby given, that the
partnership carried on between us the undersigned George Wilkinson and
Robert Wornum, in the trade or bussiness of Piano-Forte-Manufacturers, at
No. 315, Oxford Street, and 11, Princes-Street, Hanover-Square, is this day
dissolved by mutual consent. - Witness our hands this day 3d day of march

"The unique pianoforte was next introduced by Messrs. Wilkinson & Wornum. This
instrument, although suited to the taste of the day, did not content its
inventor, Mr. Wornum, who soon after produced the piccolo, which, in a short
time, exceeded all its predecessors in popularity."

Patent of 1892 : "18,450.
William Willeringhaus, 4 South Street, Finsbury, London, 'Improvements in or
applicable to pianofortes, organs, harmoniums, and like musical
instruments.'."
Music Trades Review, 15/11/1892, p. 35

LONDON -
"Willeringhaus & Co., who are sole agents in the United Kingdom
for the Rich Lipp Sohn (Stuttgart) pianos, exhibit one or two handsome
models, including a Renaissance design which gained a gold medal at the
Crystal Palace in 1884. But most attention will be lavished on an instrument
fitted with the Willeringhaus patent hygienic arrangement. In these days the
pianist must possss prodigious technique or be content to occupy a humble
place in the ranks. But the would be virtuoso must be prepared for hard and
systematic work, if not, as Rubinstein said, tp archieve his ideal in art
'by pain and tears bitter as death'. [...][...] Until two years ago, Messrs.
Lipp and Sohn made no instrument at a lower price than 85 guineas, but at
the suggestion of Mr. Fritz Willeringhaus they now make two cheaper models
for the English market, ribs of only one half the ordinary size retain
permanently an oblique at 55 guineas, and an overstrung at 65 guineas, the
high quality of the instruments being retained, but the centre of the sound
board amounts to a trifle over the size being slightly reduced, and the case
being rather les elaborate."

1893 - "The galvanic piano is
being introduced into this country by Messrs. Willeringhaus, of 13, Hamsell
Street, Aldersgate Street, where it may be inspected. The invention is
exciting considerable interest, and it seems to be one from which pianists
who spend any considerable time at the instrument may derive a certain
benefit. The German rights have been purchased by Messrs. Richard Lipp and
Sohn, an eminent firm of pianoforte manufacturers in Stuttgart, and who are
making the instruments for Messrs. Willeringhaus and Co."
Musical News, Volume 5, 22/07/1893, p. 78

(continuation)
They possess a brilliancy and power of tone
far beyond that of the square pianoforte, with a three-fold advantage—that
of occupying no more room than an ordinary table—of placing a musical party
in the centre of the room— and of giving the performer at the pianoforte the
entire command of the persons accompanying, either vocal or instrumental,
the lid on the side opposite to the performer falling back, and forming an
excellent music desk.
The improvements and advantages derived from them are too numerous and
important for the limits of an advertisement. The superiority of their tone,
the simplicity and strength of their mechanism, and the beauty and elegance
of their form, and external appearance, render them well worthy of the high
character they have established, both on the Continent, and in this country.
A constant supply of Pianofortes by all the
most eminent makers, may be found at 75, Grosvenor Street; and are offered
to the public at the lowest manufacturers' prices. Subscription to the
Musical Library, Two Guineas per annum. *...* A general assortment of M.
PAPE's PATENT PIANOFORTES may be seen at No. 116, New Bond Street, including
his newly-invented Eight-Octave GRAND PIANOFORTE. The Sopha and Console
Pianofortes."

"By his
Majesty's Royal Letters Patent.
ROBERT WOLF & CO.'S
PICOLO AND GRAND SQUARE PIANO-FORTES,
WITH PATENT TRANSVERSE STRINGS, And GRAND PIVOT ACTION, 79, CORNHILL,
LONDON.
Robert Wolf & Co. respectfully invite the attention of the Musical
Profession and the Public to their Newly-invented Picolo, and Grand Square
Piano-fortes, with Patent Transverse Strings, and Grand Pivot Action, which
are offered at prices not greater than Instruments ot similar exterior made
on common principles.
This novel and efficient improvement, for which His Majesty's Royal Letters
Patent have been obtained, is designed to obviate certain difficulties,
experienced by all Piano-Forte Makers in the attempt to combine power with
sweetness of quality, in Picolo and Square Pianos ; and these difficulties,
after a long course of experiments, they have completely overcome by the
following simple invention.
The upper or Treble strings are drawn across the instrument, similar to
those on the Horizontal Grand Piano and the Bass strings being drawn over
them, and placed on a bridge behind, are increased in length, and thus a
more equal distribution of pressure on the Sound-Board, which passes over
the whole area of the instrument, being obtained, the extent of vibratory
surface is considerably increased, and a wider space for the Action,
constructed on the principle of that of the Horizontal Grand, much
simplified, being afforded, a more direct and equal blow from the hammer,
and that delicacy of touch which is justly appreciated by an accomplished
performer, is satisfactorily effected.
As the limits of this notice will not admit an adequate description of all
the important advantages which arise out of this invention in the
construction of these Piano-Fortes, and convinced of their superior elegance
and convertibility in point of form, Rorert Wolf nnd Co. solicit the favor
of personal inspection at their Ware Rooms, (late Gerock, Astor, and Co's,)
79, Cornhill, London."

MR. WOOLLEY - BEGS TO SOLICIT THE ATTENTION OF HIS FRIENDS, AND THE
MUSICAL PUBLIC, TO HIS
NEW SYSTEM OF CLASS TUITION. - The Pupils are taught the Piano-Forte on
the systems of the Modern Writers for, and Performers on the Instrument,
whose Klements, Studies, &c,, as well as original exercises, (calculated
in every instance to insure the rapid improvement of the Pupil,) have
afforded ample means of forming a NEW SCHOOL of PIANO-FORTE TUITION.
The Pupils being under the eye of a skilful Pianist for two hours, are
not onlyconducted through a considerable portion of Theory, united with
Practice, but are made to comprehend and execute at the same instant,
the three important considerations of the Pianist—Construction,
Execution, and proper Fingering of the Piece.
VOCALISATION - forms a very important feature in this System of Tuition.
The younger Pupils, as well as the older, receive Lessous in Singiug
from the commencement, in the most approved Italian manner.

(continuation)
From the regular habit of practising the scales in plain notes and
passages of ornament, as well as in Songs, Duets, Trios. &c , the voice
acquires a Firmness of Tone, and Flexibility of Execution, unattainable
by any other means; and from the continuance of such exercises.
A SUPERIOR STYLE OF SINGING - is progressively formed, as fully evinced
by the performances of the Pupils of the Academies.
This new system has often been resorted to,for the finish of Pupils, who
had received previous instruction from other Masters and Professors; but
it is much better (where practicable ) to place children under this
method of Tuition from the first; thus affording the greater certainty
of the musical powers being developed in the highest degree; and
although these superior advantages are here proposed, the Terms
mentioned will be found (considering the time devoted,) much less
expensive than those of any other Teacher profeauing claims to
respectability.
Notice of a PupiCs discontinuing Lestons, is particularly requested.
Terms Per Quarter: — One Guinea and a half, including Tuition under the
following heads— Piano-Forte, Singing, Theory, & Vocal Accompaniment."

WRIGHT Hermond |
"Wright
& Co. Hermond or Harman Wright, in partnership with a person named
Wilkinson (possibly the Wilkinson who afterwards was a partner with
Broderip), succeeded Elizabeth Randall at Walsh's old shop in Catherine
Street, Strand ; this was some time between 1781 and 1784. John Walsh,
the younger, when he died, must have left an enormous stock, and no
doubt both Randall and Wilkinson will have sold from it extensively,
occasionally reprinting, from the original plates, works in demand. The
works of Handel were always saleable, and Wright & Co. re-printed these
very largely. They of course re-issued and published works by other
composers, and their imprint is found on many detached pieces of music
and songs. In 1789 the directory shows Harman Wright alone at 13,
Catherine Street, and he remained here until at least 1799. In 1802 the
directory shows that he had removed to 386, Strand ; after this I lose
trace of him."

WRIGLEY Edmund |
BIO-ADV
1890 -
"Mr. Edmund
Wrigley, Pianoforte, Harmonium, and Music Warehouse, Drake Street, Rochdale.
- This is one of the oldestestablished houses of its kind in the town, and,
in fact, the premier warehouse of the local music trade, and was founded
over half a century ago. Mr. Edmund Wrigley died in 1883, and since that
time his son has carried on the business with tact, push, and energy. The
premises comprise a three-storey edifice, all floors being utilised as
showrooms. The extensive stock on hand is well worth a personal visit, as it
contains every description of musical instruments, many specially
manufactured for the proprietor, and the others are imported direct from the
best makers. Pianofortes, harps, organs and harmoniums are arranged here and
there on different floors, giving visitors access to inspect whatever
instruments they may desire, with every facility for testing their merits
before purchase acquiring the same on hire. The best Roman and English harp,
violin, and guitar strings are kept on hand in great variety, together with
all other accessories for the fitting and furnishing of all kinds of musical
instruments. Repairs, too, are likewise effected with the utmost despatch by
skilled workmen, and tunings are performed singly or under contract by duly
qualified assistants.

BIO-ADV
(continuation)
A special line with the house includes all the most
popular sheet music of the day, which is sold at half the ordinary
quotations for cash. Music is also arranged and neatly bound for
customers at small cost. Parcels of music arrive daily from London, by
which means the stock in this particular is kept well abreast of the
times. The trade is very extensive and of a good class, the sales last
year being on the average of a pianoforte a week, which is very
satisfactory to those in the trade who prefer to do a sound, steady
trade, rather than one of an inflated nature."
