BIO
1890 -
"Waddington Bros., Pianoforte Manufacturers, 9, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds.
The extraordinary success attained by the wellknown firm of Messrs.
Waddington Bros., pianoforte manufacturers, of York, and No. 9, Woodhouse
Lane, Leeds, is a striking instance of the results of well-directed energy
and enterprise. This extensive business dates back in its foundation to the
year 1840, when it was established in York by Mr. William Alfred Waddington, and from a comparatively small establishment the manufactory has
developed into the largest works of the kind in the provinces. This
gentleman was succeeded by Messrs. William Henry, Alfred, and Walter
Waddington in 1881, who commenced business in Park Row, Leeds, in 1882, and
in the year following removed to the present extensive and commodious
premises. These comprise a very handsome shop and well-appointed showrooms
above, in which is a very fine display of pianofortes of the firm's own
manufacture. It is interesting to note that Messrs. Waddington Bros. have
been awarded several prize medals, not only for excellence of manufacture,
but also for special improvements introduced into the construction of their
pianofortes. The medals awarded to Messrs. Waddington Bros. were gained at
the exhibitions held in York, 1866; Leeds, 1875; York, 1879; Edinburgh,
1886; Newcastle, 1887; and Saltaire, 1887; and pianos of their manufacture
were exhibited at the recent Glasgow International Exhibition and the
Cardiff and South Wales Exhibition. The firm also possess numerous
testimonials, expressing the highest encomiums of praise, from many of the
most eminent professors and artistes of the day. The manufactory at York, as
before intimated, is THE largest and most complete in the provinces, being
replete with all the most improved machinery and appliances. Upwards of 100
skilled and experienced workmen are constantly employed in the various
departments. Messrs. Waddington Bros. have a stock of over five hundred
pianos in their showrooms and warehouse. They are of the best quality only,
and guaranteed for ten years. Messrs. Waddington Bros. are also the sole
agents in the United Kingdom for the well-known and popular Hamilton Organ,
the special features of which are superior power and quality of tone. The
business connections of this firm are of a very widespread and influential
character, and besides their extensive home trade they have a very large and
rapidly increasing export business, the firm being well represented in the
American and colonial markets. All the partners take an active part in the
business, and the increasing popularity of their pianos is well attested by
the enormous sales, and the continued demands upon the resources of the
manufactory for their production."

"UNA-CORDA, PATENT SELF-ADJUSTING PIANO-FORTE. - R.
Wales, 33, Charles-street, Hampstcad Road, near the end of
Tottenham-court-road, Inventor and Manufacturer of the above unique
Instrument, solicits the attention of the Musical Profession and the Public
in general. The Una-Corda Piano-Forte is strung throughout with steel-wire,
by which an equal temperament is preserved; and having only one string to
each note, the insufferable discordance, occasioned by bad unisons, is
entirely removed. It possesses a quality of tone superior in strength and
sweetness to Piano-Fortes manufactured on the old principle ; it is found to
stand years in tune; the strings are not liable to break, on account of
their thickness and strength. Added to which, the tuning pins, being
perforated strings, may be put on by the most delicate hand. R. W.
manufactures also, on the lowest terms, Cabinet, Grand, and Square
Piano-Fortes on the most approved principles."
The Harmonicon, William Ayrton, 02/1827,
p. 90

" PIANO-FORTES - NOT REQUIRING TO BE TUNED. -
Grand, Cabinet, Square, and Vocalist Piano-fortes, of the Una-Corda (or
Mono-chord) Patent Spring, Self-adjusting mode, may be procured at the
Patentee's Manufactory,
R. WALES, 33, CHARLES STREET, Opposite the Reservoir, end of Tottenham Court
Road, At Prices much below those made on the Old Construction, and will be
found to stand in tune from One to Eight Years; the Inventor solicits the
inspection of the Musical World, and persons about to purchase, to these
highly-esteemed Piano-fortes, N.B. Old Instruments taken in Exchange."

"PIANO-FORTES - CONSTRUCTED SO AS TO KEEP IN TUNE FOR YEARS. R. WALES -
Returns his best thanks to the Nobility, Gentry, and the Public, for the
patronage he has received for many years, and begs to inform them he has
opened an EXTENSIVE WAREHOUSE, No. 11, RED LION Square, HOLBORN, for the
SALE of his highly-approved INSTRUMENTS, on the Patent Spring Una-Corda (or
Monochord) self-adjusting principles, in Grands, Cabinets, Cottages,
Vocalists, and Squares, which will be found worthy of attention. Manufactory
as usual, 33, Charles Street, Hampstead Road, established 1810."
The Harmonicon, William Ayrton, 06/1830,
p. 267

"WALES'S NEW PATENT
QUADRILATERAL GRAND PIANO-FORTE. - R. WALES, Inventor and Manufacturer of
the Patent Spring Una-corda Self-adjusting Piano-forte, respectfully invites
the Musical Profession, Amateurs, and the Patrons of Art in general, to the
inspection of a Square Piano-forte upon an entirely novel principle,
embracing all the advantages in tone and action of a Grand Piano, and
obviating, by the extreme compactness and elegance of its construction, the
objection to which the clumsy and unaccommodating form of the Horizontal
Grand Piano-forte has hitherto been subject. R. Walks lias been for some
years engaged in the construction of this Square Instrument upon the Grand
principle—an object, till now, considered unattainable; and in the confident
anticipation of Public Patronage, submits it to general inspection at his
Ware Rooms, No. 11, Red Lion Square, Holborn."

for him by Mr. William Whitely, of the Westbourne Grove, London. The piano
is made according to Mr. Ward's new patent, and it is totally novel, both

specimens of the "Patent Harmonic Angelute," an an entirely new stringed
instrument, having the contour of the harp, the strings and action of the

"Warren's 20 Guinea Cottage Piano-Fortes. -
ARE NOW SELLING AT THE Manufactory, 71, Leadenhall Street - (Removed from 1
and 2, Liverpool Street, Bishopsgate Street.) - These Instruments are well
manufactured of the best seasoned wood, FINE FULL TONE AND GOOD TOUCH. A two
vears warranty given with each instrument. ESTABLISHED TWENTY-ONE YEARS. The
only house in London where a good sound instrument can be obtained at the
above low price, (for cash only). SMALL PROFIT AND QUICK RETURNS ! JOHN
WARREN, 71, Leadenhall St., opposite Aldeate Pomp."
The Musical World, Volume 22, 1847, p. 402

"Cheap Pianoforte.—Cheapness is extending,
like a new sunrise, over all the branches of the arts cud sciences. We paid
a visit, last week, to Warren's Pianoforte Manufactory, Leadenhall Street,
and were much surprised to find a capital new instrument, purchaseable at
twenty guineas. We also saw some Piccolos, very superiorly made, at eighteen
guineas. This is cheapness with a vengeance, and must ensure an
extraordinary sale. We should like to know whence Mr. Warren's profits can
come. Pianofortes new, and really good, at the above prices, is a type of
the present antimonopolizing times, when men will sacrifice themselves to
outdo their neighbours. We hope Mr. Warren does make a profit."

"MUSIC
TAUGHT ON A NEW AND SUPERIOR PRINCIPLE. - To grown-up Ladies and

Leicester square, Composer of the celeBrated Battle of Trafalgar, hi ;
The Surrender of Toulon, 4s.; The Lord's Prayer, 2-;.; My Mother, 1s.

Lessons in Singing, and on the Piano Forte, to grown up Ladies and
Gentlemen in particular, who had not an opportunity of learning before;

trimental to the voice, in female voices particularly. N. B. Mr. Watlen

1802 - "The Lord’s Prayer.” Set to
Music by John Watlen, Professor of the Piano-forte. A seasonable present to
youth of either sex. Mr. Waten has been a Lieutenant in the Navy, and is now
settled in London respectably as a Composer and Teacher of Music. We have
observed various Rondos, founded on Scottish Airs, of this Gentleman's
composition, lively and playful, though not very profound. By saying so, we
do not mean to depreciate. In light compositions, consisteney and facility
may be preferable to laboured and extraneous nodulation."

Patent of 1865 :

- or -
"A.D. 1865, June 15. — N°
1623. Way, George Edgar. — (A communication from Maurice Vergnes.) —
Improvements in the manufacture of pianofortes. These improvements have
reference to two former inventions, for which see Abridgments dated
respectively April 20th, 1864, No. 992, and July 4th, 1864, No. 1662 : By
the present improvements a good length of string is obtained for square
pianofortes, while the width of the case is little more than the length of
the key-board; a good repetition action is also secured, and a simple means
of adjusting the touch is provided. The strings are carried by an open
rectangular metal frame, in which the wrest planks are fixed. Beneath the
frame is the sound board of a rectangular form to fill the space enclosed by
the case or nearly so. The bridge for the middle and treble strings extends
in a curved line from the further left-hand corner of the sound board to the
right-hand side of the instrument near the treble wrest plank, and the lower
bass strings cross the other strings at a sufficient height to be clear of
the bridge;

(continuation)
they pass from the near left corner of
the frame to a short bridge at the further right corner of the frame and
thence to a wrest plank. In the improved action, the hammer is held up
by a spring connected to the butt, and when at its highest position it
bears against the under side of the key; it is acted on by a hopper
which is jointed to a piece fixed to the under side of the key. This
piece carries also a bracket, which serves as a guide for a screw pin
and adjusting button projecting horizontally from the back of the
hopper. Projecting from the back rail is a bracket, to which is jointed
a padded back check held in a perpendicular position by a small spring;
an arm of the check carries a screw pin, at the upper end of which is a
button coming into contact with a pad on the under side of the key. In
order to lift the key to its normal position its rear end is connected
by a cord to a metal spring mounted on the back rail."

WHEATSTONE Charles |

"Wheatstone's Ten Guinea
Harmonium, manufactured expressly for churches, chapels, schools, &c., is
made on a greatly-Improved construction, combines all the latest
Improvements, and is manufactured solely by them. It has the compass of five
octaves, an expression stop, and possesses a powerful rich quality of tone,
answers with the greatest rapidity to the touch, and can be produced loud or
soft at pleasure. It has a substantial oak case, can be warranted in every
respect, and is indispensable to the school-room, singing-class, etc. The
Ten Guinea Harmonium will be taken in exchange for any more expensive ones
at full price if required. The more expensive Harmoniums, with from three to
ten stops, range from 16 to 30 guineas. They are equally adapted to the
church or drawing-room. For the former, it will be found most valuable, and
in many respects preferable to the organ. Messrs. WHEATSTONE obtained the
only Great Exhibition Prize for Harmoniums in 1851.The MECHANICAL and FINGER
HARMONIUM, which can be used mechanically or not, without any preparation.
This is a perfectly new invention of Messrs. Wheatstone and Co., and can be
aeen only at their warerooms. This instrument will be found to be
particularly useful when the Harmonium performer cannot always attend. The
PIANO HARMONIUM is made expressly for playing by the same performer with tho
Pianoforte. Price Twelve Guineas. Messrs. WHEATSTONE and CO., have Just
received a large assortment of the ALEXANDRE HARMONIUM, for which Messrs.
Alexandre et Flls received the French medal of honour. Including the
different Instruments with and without the percussion action, and that with
the expression a la main, at reduced prices. These Harmoniums have been
brought to the greatest perfection, and are equally adapted as an
accompaniment to the voice or pianoforte, and have been pronounced the best
by Adam, Auber, Liszt, Rossini, Thalberg. &c. Also the SIX GUINEA HARMONIUM,
or rather Seraphlne, with 4 octaves, suitable for Sunday-schools and small
Binging-classes. WHEATSTONE and CO., 20, Conduit-street, Regent-street,

be produced from a spring, which would otherwise sound but one note. The
scale may thus be played as rapidly as by the fingers upon a pianoforte.
Set the spring in vibration by a twang with the forefinger of the left
hand, and draw the piston with the right hand.

Patent of 1836 : "July
27, 1836. — Charles Wheatstone. Continuous sounds produced from pianoforte
strings or springs, by means of currents of air which pass through apertures
slightly wider than the body the air vibrates."
The History of the Pianoforte, Edgar Brinsmead, 1879,
p. 205 (archive.org)
&
"A.D. 1836, July 27. — N° 7164. WHEATSTONE,
Charles, and GREEN, John. — A new method or methods of forming musical
instruments in which "continuous sounds are produced from strings, wires, or
springs.
1.
In this method of forming musical instruments continuous sounds are produced
from strings, wires, or springs (stretched between fixed supports at their
ends) "by means of a current of "air, which is directed upon a limited
portion of the vibrating "length of the particular string, wire, or spring
from which "continuous sound is for the time being required to be produced."
By continuous sounds are meant those sounds which may be continued "so long
as the exciting cause is applied, as those of "the organ or violin, in
contradistinction to abrupt and evanescent "sounds, as those of the
pianoforte or harp." The aforesaid portion of the vibrating length of the
string, wire, or spring must be adapted or adjusted "to a slit or linear
aperture through "which the current of air passes, and the width of which
must "be a little greater than the diameter of the said string, wire, "or
spring." Various methods of producing these sounds are described.
2.
A method whereby a hammer "such as is used in piano "fortes" is caused to
strike each string, wire, or spring at the same instant that the valve is
opened to act upon the same.
3.
A method whereby continuous sounds corresponding to different notes of the
musical scale are produced from the same string, wire, or spring by means of
a current of air.
4.
A method whereby in addition to 3, the same pressure of the finger (with or
without the intervention of a stop), which causes the vibrating length of
such string, &c. to be shortened, also causes a simultaneous opening of the
valve, by which the wind is allowed to act on the string, &c.
5.
A method wherein the wind chest is divided by a partition into two
compartments, each furnished with valves so arranged in respect to the
bellows, that the current or currents of air by which continuous sounds are
to be produced is always forced in the same direction through each aperture
to which a string, &c. is adjusted, as well when the bellows is in the act
of being drawn out as when it is being pressed in."

BIO-ADV
1890 - "W. R. Whitelock,
Importer of Foreign and Dealer in English Pianofortes, Boar Lane and Albion
Street, Leeds. It is particularly interesting to meet with a business of
such old standing and extensive connections as that of Mr. W. R. Whitelock,
importer of foreign and dealer in English pianofortes. It is now more than
seventy years ago since the grandfather of the present proprietor commenced
business as an organ builder and pianoforte manufacturer at Armley, near
Leeds. Several members of this family have also been practically engaged in
this industry,, as the father and uncles of Mr. W. R. Whitelock entered
extensively into the business, and this gentleman himself, having thoroughly
mastered the trade by extended experience in Newcastle-on-Tyne, commenced
business at Armley in 1877. Owing to the rapid development of the business
and the necessity for increased accommodation, he removed to New Station
Street, Leeds, and subsequently acquired the present extensive and
commodious premises at the corner of Boar Lane and Albion Street. This is a
large four-storied building, having a very extensive floor area, and forms a
handsome and attractive feature of this busy neighbourhood. The large and
valuable stock of instruments in this well-known depôt includes pianofortes
and harmoniums by the best English and Continental makers, including such
well-known names as Görs and Kallman, of Berlin, Rudolf, Ibach, Sohn, of
Barmen, and Collard & Collard, Kirkman, &c., and many other leading English
makers.
These instruments are
remarkable for their elegant designs, richness, sweetness, and power of
tone. They are made in every variety of choice hardwoods, such as ebony,
walnut, rosewood, &c., and in their construction are replete with all the
most recent improvements. ->

(continuation)
These instruments are offered on the most reasonable terms consistent
with the exigencies of trade. Mr. Whitelock has also most successfully
introduced into his business the hire-purchase system, extending over
one, two, and three years. And in this connection it may be mentioned
that the success of this system is due almost wholly to the generous and
lenient treatment by Mr. Whitelock of his customers who, having
purchased on the hire plan, have been unable to continue their payments.
In such cases Mr. Whitelock has never taken any undue advantage, but, on
the other hand, has given every possible assistance, and the result is,
and always will be, a mutual and lasting benefit to all concerned. Any
instrument purchased from him may be exchanged free of charge within
twelve months of date of purchase if not approved of, thus allowing
customers ample time to be perfectly assured of the value of the
instrument selected. All instruments are also marked. in plain figures.
The business throughout is conducted with marked ability, energy, and
enterprise, and it is no flattery to state that there are few men better
known or more highly esteemed in business circles than the proprietor of
this extensive and highly popular establishment. Mr. W. R. Whitelock, as
before intimated, possesses the advantage of long and thorough practical
experience, and by his well-known integrity.. spirited enterprise, and
genial courtesy has secured the esteem and confidence of a very
widespread and valuable connection."
